Week 13 – Yannarie – Exmouth – Ningaloo Reef

Our free camp on the way to Exmouth was interesting. We arrived at Yannarie River (dry) and set up.  We collected a whole pile of wood for a fire that night. We were going to cook our dinner on the fire. Before we got to cook our jaffles, Nanna had to try a marshmallow – dessert before dinner – not acceptable! We used the jaffle iron and made some yummy jaffles even if they were slightly burnt around the edges. Then we cooked marshmallows for dessert. That night Nanna heard some unusual sounds outside the van. She turned on the outside light and saw a whole herd of cattle around the van. Some were rubbing up against the van. In the morning Pa found lick marks all over the van and car. They had tried to eat the bullbar and left some marks – not impressed! We arrived in Exmouth on the North West Cape. Week 23 – Streaky Bay – Sheringa Beach – Tumby Bay – Adelaide

The area around Streaky Bay is mainly farming area with a very wild coastline. We took a drive around a few loop roads around the rocky headlands. The beaches had some surf but there was no-one around in the water. Granites had a good left breaking over massive granite boulders. We drove further down to Cape Blanche and Sceale Bay. Further down the coast we ended up at Point Labatte which is a seal colony. We went fishing from the jetty at Streaky Bay in the afternoon. Nanna got in a real tangle. Just like fishing with the kids. A local teenager caught a world record white pointer shark on his rod off Streaky Bay. They have a model of it in the garage. Our next stop was a free camp at Sheringa Beach. On the way we stopped in at a few tourist hotspots – Murphy’s Haystacks and Woolshed Cave. Week 24 – Victor Harbor – Mt Gambier – Daylesford – Benalla – Gundagai

Victor Harbor was a nice town, right on the south coast of S.A. The road from Adelaide to Victor Harbor was shocking – bumpy and potholed. After lunch we went for an explore of the town. There is a long jetty connecting the town to an island offshore – Granite Island. Horse drawn trams carry tourists across to the island for a small fee.  We drove down to Goolwa and headed onto Hindmarsh Island to find the mouth of the Murray River. The Murray forms a couple of large lakes before emptying into the sea at Murray mouth. Lake Alexandrina is one of the largest lakes in Australia. We explored the beaches nearby, Middleton Point, Port Elliot and Chitin Rocks. There is some swell so Pa might get a surf tomorrow. The surf was not too bad at Middleton Point.
