Preparation

We have been busy since the end of the school holidays preparing the caravan and car for our big adventure. Over the next 6 months or so we plan to travel around Australia visiting the remote outback, Northern Territory and Western Australia before returning via the Nullarbor (see below). This is a rough plan of our route as we aim to be very flexible with our exploration.



The van will be packed over the next few days with our essentials, including bikes and surfboards ready for a mid-week getaway. We will post once a week if we have access to the internet at our location.

Week 2 - Menindee Lakes to Port Augusta via the Flinders Ranges

We regretfully left Broken Hill and went a short distance (135km) to a beautiful park at Copi Hollow on the Menindee Lakes. The caravan park is owned by the Broken Hill Ski Club and they use the money from the travellers to make their park better. They have a private lake for skiing - not bad! The lake gets filled up each August with water from the Darling. We had a perfect spot right next to the lake and were entertained by a spectacular sunset. We also drove to the other lakes down some awful, corrugated tracks. We visited the site of Burke and Wills' expedition encampment next to the Darling River. Week 13 – Yannarie – Exmouth – Ningaloo Reef

Our free camp on the way to Exmouth was interesting. We arrived at Yannarie River (dry) and set up.  We collected a whole pile of wood for a fire that night. We were going to cook our dinner on the fire. Before we got to cook our jaffles, Nanna had to try a marshmallow – dessert before dinner – not acceptable! We used the jaffle iron and made some yummy jaffles even if they were slightly burnt around the edges. Then we cooked marshmallows for dessert. That night Nanna heard some unusual sounds outside the van. She turned on the outside light and saw a whole herd of cattle around the van. Some were rubbing up against the van. In the morning Pa found lick marks all over the van and car. They had tried to eat the bullbar and left some marks – not impressed! We arrived in Exmouth on the North West Cape. Week 8 – Darwin and Litchfield

  We have had a fantastic time in Darwin. The weather has been the same every day – sunny and 32-35 degrees during the day dropping to 18-20 at night. The smoke from fires in the National Parks has been an issue at times but they can only burn at this time of the year as it is too wet at other times. We visited the Museum and Art Gallery of Northern Territory which was a great museum. There was an exhibition about Cyclone Tracy which smashed Darwin on Christmas day in 1974. Basically, Darwin was almost wiped out. The photos and information about this was scary, it wouldn’t have been fun being here and living through it. Darwin has been rebuilt since. The waterfront area of Darwin is built around one of the largest harbours in Australia, nearly 12 times the size of Sydney Harbour. Of course we had to go to the Mindil Markets on Thursday.
